These Date Sweetened Chocolate Chip Cookies are naturally sweetened with dates and made with just a few simple ingredients! They’re perfect for dessert or an afternoon snack!
Hi friends!
I’ve been testing this recipe for date sweetened chocolate chip cookies for you guys for a couple of weeks now. After 5 test batches before I perfected them but I must say they’re pretty darn good. Let’s talk about a few things when it comes to these cookies.
- These cookies contain no added sugar aside from the chocolate chips. (You can find sugar-free chocolate chips if you want them).
- That does not automatically make them healthy. They still contain sugar. Yes, the sugar is naturally occurring in the dates, but it’s still sugar.
My youngest was actually the inspiration for these cookies. I wanted to develop a no added sugar cookie recipe for him that I could use as a base recipe and these are perfect. Out of all three kids, the youngest actually likes these the best, which works out well for me. I’ll be tweaking the recipe slightly and serving these to him often.
Date Sweetened Chocolate Chip Cookies
For him, I’ll likely add some ground flax and hemp seeds. I’ll also probably try replacing some of the flour with baby cereal! And I may replace the chocolate chips with finely chopped raisins or chopped dried blueberries. You could also add peanut butter to these for some extra healthy fats!
Here’s how you make them:

Great recipe. I cut the dates down to 1/2 cup as I like less-sweet cookies than most people, used olive oil, and used 70% dark chocolate (hand-chopped bits as 70% chips are hard to come by) and they turned out superb. Absolutely loved the texture – soft but not gummy

So good!!

Thanks for your tips Lindsay. I’ve tried a couple of your recipes as I’m trying to go healthy – my problem has always been that I start off with discipline but yo-yo back to whence I came in a month or two. I’m currently Kindle reading this amazing book called Struggle Buster which advocates eating that which you grew up eating even if its deemed carb or fat heavy (in my case dates, hence trying out this recipe of yours 🙂 )…lets see if if works! Many thanks and keep up the great work 🙂 Cheers – Kyle.

My kids love these cookies! I sometimes substitute out some or all of the oil with banana or the flour with almond flour. Always a favorite! Best of all the recipes for chocolate chip cookies I have found online. Thank you!

Hi Lindsey! Do you think I could sub the whole wheat flour for all purpose, coconut or oat? That´’s all I’ve got right now!
Thanks

These cookies are soo good! I just made them and love them. It’s so hard to find good date sweetened treats
Jennifer says
SO delicious! I love these warm with a little ice cream. 🙂 I used grapeseed oil, because that’s all I had!

Love these cookies for all 3 kids! I use rice cereal instead of flour to up the iron and add hemp seeds too. Have used white chocolate chips before and they were amazing!
Leslie says
These were so good! Just the right amount of sweetness. I added 1 cup of dates because that’s what I had and then added more whole wheat flour at the end to make the batter thicker. They still turned out perfectly.

Excellent recipe!!

Is it possible to substitute date syrup (D’Vash brand) instead of starting with whole dates? If so, how much of the syrup would be comparable to the 3/4 cup whole dates?
Lindsay says
i think it’s 1 Tbsp date syrup for each date so that would be 7-8 tbsp. Not sure how it woudl work it in this recipe!

Made these today with my 4 year old daughter. Very simple recipe to follow. We used low fodmap white flour and the mix seemed very runny, however we gave it a go and they turned out great. Soft and chewy. My daughter loves them.

Very good, turned out perfect! Just enough sweetness, chewy all around great texture. I will definitely make these again.
Thank you for the great recipe

Hi. Do you think I could substitute the eggs for flax eggs. So ,2 eggs would be 2 tablespoons of ground flax and 6 tablespoons of water. I would love to make this a vegan dish. Any other ideas that might be better? Thanks
Lindsay says
i haven’t tried it myself but flax eggs work well in most of my recipes!
Deborah says
Hi Lindsay,
Just to report back, the flax eggs worked perfectly. Also, we like the cookies out of the freezer even more. Thanks for a great recipe.

So happy to find this recipe. I’m cutting out refined sugars and thought I’d never be able to have desserts again until it dawned on me that maybe there were recipes out there that used fruit for a sugar substitute. This is the first one I’ve tried and, if the rest are as good as this one, I won’t miss processed sugar at all!

Hi Lindsay! You mentioned above that you might try adding peanut butter to these cookies. I was wondering if I could use runny peanut butter or almond butter in place of the oil? Please let me know! I look forward to making these.
Sophie
Lindsay says
yep! i think that would work.
Jo says
Are these better to freeze cooked or uncooked?
Lindsay says
I would freeze them uncooked

Really great recipe, although I did my twist on it. Walnut and hemp seeds blitzed and mixed with oatflour. Added shredded coconut as well. Loved the soft and not too heavy texture, just had to flatten them out as they don’t spread. Thank you!

These came out so good! I used almond flour. The batter looked runny, but came out perfect!
