You Might Be Married To A Dietitian If…

Hi Friends!

In case you didn’t know, tomorrow is National Registered Dietitian Day. I’ll be back to share my second annual round-up of RDs who blog, but for today, in honor of my first National Registered Dietitian Day, Mr. Bean is here to share some of things he’s noticed about being married to an RD. Perhaps some of you can relate?

Since Lindsay became an RD, I’ve noticed some changes to my lifestyle – some conscious, others not. They have largely been positive and healthy, but I’m occasionally shocked with some of the behavioral changes I catch myself making. I thought I’d take the opportunity to channel my inner “Jeff Foxworthy” and share some of my revelations.

Ever wondered what it's like to be married to a Registered Dietitian? Here's a sneak peek thanks to my husband!

You might be married to an RD if….

  1. You’re appalled at the amount of salt in things and most restaurant food tastes like you’re a white-tailed deer licking a block of salt. Soup used to be something I could eat in a restaurant, now I have to eat homemade to make sure I don’t explode from water retention.
  2. You read nutrition labels, and now do it without a second thought. This kind of goes with along with the salt one; ignorance was bliss. Now I have to get bummed out when something tasty I used to love ends up looking like a health disaster.
  3. You have a favorite dessert that has sweet potatoes or avacados in it. It’s good, can’t lie. Suck it up men, try these sweet potato brownies – they rock.
  4. You know it’s spelled “dietitian” and not “dietician” and have corrected people. Yeah, for real. It is. Look it up. Shocking, I know.
  5. You tell the doctor you’re married to a dietitian to gain potential bonus points during your physical. “How’s you’re diet?” “Well doc, my wife’s a dietitian SO…you know, I do alright.”
  6. Occasional lunches out with the guys at work are a safe haven for giant burritos and platters of buffalo wings. I’m human. Buffalo wings and Burritos are from heaven.
  7. You judge other peoples’ grocery carts- ‘Did you see that dude’s cart!? Four cases of mountain dew, three boxes of twinkies, and Dinty Moore Beef Stew!!” You know you do it.
  8. Ingredient lists have become frightening. The fewer the better. The ingredient list for a potato chip or cracker shouldn’t look like a team of scientists reached a breakthrough.
  9. Friends ask you very abstract nutrition questions to pass along to your wife. “Can you ask Lindsay what she thinks about this cleanse?- I’m only going to eat tabasco and green tea for a week”  …paleo this….detox that….ugh, just eat good food regularly for crying outloud.
  10. Friends constantly tease “does your wife know you’re eating that?” Hardy har har… That may actually apply to all married guys- not sure. Health initiatives seem to be female driven more often than not.
  11. Fast food restaurants have become odd, mysterious places that make you uncomfortable. I feel like I shouldn’t be in here…

    Love this!! I am not a dietitian nor am I married to one, BUT I can relate to a lot of these! I too feel that fast food places are just odd…I don’t feel right in there either. I may have done a little cart judging every now and then but then again I’m sure I’ve been judged too 🙂

    Well, I am not married to a dietitian but I have a dietitian as a friend and I learn a lot about food from her. I like healthy meals a lot. I often try to cook and eat fresh veggies. I try as much as I can to stay away from the fast foods but sometimes the busy schedule of the day got me stopping by just to catch a bite for some energy before I can get me something real good to eat.
    But overall, the answer to health problems lies largely in what people eat. People who are more careful about eating healthy and staying fit worry less about health problems.

    Another WIN for Mr. Bean! I am not a dietiTian nor am I married to one but some of these even apply to me as someone who tries to live an active healthy life.
    With that being said, Rock on Mr. Bean, Rock on.

    Working in the health field (nonfood related) there are a few things I’ve influenced the significant other to do. (or family as well).

    This is all stuff I have found myself doing now that I’m trying to eat healthier. I think my husband has learned a few things, too, especially about the better options to eat. But, I also learn from him, too 🙂

    LOVE these!! Fun post, Mr. Bean! 🙂 I’m definitely NOT a dietitian (I was about to misspell that…..oops!), but I can relate to a few of those things on the list as someone who is always trying to live healthier and get my family to go along with me. 🙂

    The only time I see the inside of a McDonald’s now is when we’re on the road and need a bathroom break. I know hubby stops and breathes in the smell of burgers and fries for a few seconds before we leave. 😉

    Love this!! My boyfriend loves dating a dietitian because I’ve been making him smoothies in the morning…otherwise, he has a tendency to skip breakfast.

    This is great! I’m not married to a dietitian (<– learned a new spelling here!) nor am I one, but healthy eating is a part of my everyday lifestyle. I totally relate to many of these comments. I used to be self-conscious about my healthy eating until friends and people I work with told me they were jealous! I've even inspired some friends and family to make healthier changes 🙂

    I’m not a dietitian, I’m not even that healthy all the time, but BF definitely feels the need check in when he eats fast food or things he knows I’d roll my eyes at. As far as the ingredients list lets just say I often ask him how his daily can of chemicals (aka Coke Zero) is 🙂

    Sweet potatoes are amazing as desserts! Now you need to try a baked sweet potatoe topped with either maple of vanilla almond butter. It is AWESOME!

    Hahahaha! Love it! My sister is a nutritionist so I’m in the same boat, and by association so is the hubby because I hold him to the same standards. He has told me he has caught himself doing the same things now. It’s hilarious, I love it!

    This is HILARIOUS. I have to send this to my ex because he would related on so many levels! He knew nothing about ingredients before he met me…so you can only imagine how scared he is of partially hydrogenated oil now!

    I’m not a dietitian, but I think Eric can relate to some of these…probably only some of them though. I can’t really picture him jumping on the avocado or sweet potato in dessert bandwagon anytime soon…

    Too funny! I’m not a dietitian (yet!) but I know my husband has been influenced by my healthy eating habits. I’m sure he’d tell you about all the foods I “ruined” for him by showing him an ingredient list.

    After I started reading HLBs, I really started paying attention to ingredient lists more often than nutrition facts. I look at both, but now I make sure the list is SHORT. It really opened my eyes to how processed things are, and how “all natural” claims are bit skewed.

    You know that I love any post from Mr. Bean–this does not disappoint. I am not married to a dietitian, I’m the one checking labels, but my husband likes to eat healthy as well–thankfully he doesn’t have people at work peering over his shoulder asking if I approve, or sticking tampons in his pocket 😉 Nice post Mr.

    Love this! I think my husband would have to agree with a lot of these as well, I am a nutritionist and I think/hope to have made a difference in his life style and other family members as well!

    Haha sounds similar! I’m an RD as well and my boyfriend has picked up a few good habits from me too. When I first met him, he was eating Ramen and pizza and didn’t know what asparagus looked like. Now he reads labels and eats lots of fruit&veggies.

    After graduating with my bachelor’s in nutrition my friends were always asking me various nutrition questions. Now that I’m married, and working towards my RD, I seem to be the go-to for questions like, “are almonds vegetables?” Haha.
