Hi friends!
A couple of weeks ago, we had my parents over for dinner and my mom brought a version of this cream cheese fruit dip for the kids to eat. When I played sports in high school one of the moms always seemed to bring this to our team dinners and it was always a fan favorite.
I decided to see if I could put a bit of a healthier spin on it since my kids enjoyed it so much. So I used low-fat cream cheese, swapped plain Greek yogurt for butter and reduced the sugar and guess what? My kids still gobble it up!
Marshmallow Cream Cheese Fruit Dip
Is this a fruit dip with marshmallow fluff and yogurt?
Although most versions of this dip use cream cheese and marshmallow fluff, this version does not. Marshmallow fluff is a storebought mixture that contains corn syrup, sugar syrup, vanilla and egg whites. It’s basically a spreadable form of marshmallow and while delicious, for this recipe in particular I was looking to add a healthier spin which is why I use yogurt.
Recipe for Fruit Dip Using Yogurt
Plain Greek yogurt adds some protein to the dip and makes it a little heartier. We mix it with cream cheese to help give the dip a little more body and make it easier to scoop without dripping everywhere.
It also reduces the sugar content of the dip and since you’re dipping it in fruit, which is already sweet, that works out just fine.
How To Make Fruit Dip with Cream Cheese and Yogurt
This dip couldn’t be easier and you only need 5 ingredients! Just collect the following ingredients, mix them up and serve.
- 1 package cream cheese – You can use regular or 1/3 less fat. You want it room temperature so it mixes easily with the yogurt.
- Plain Greek yogurt – I use full fat but 2% or fat-free would probably be fine.
- Powdered sugar – The original recipe uses a mix of brown sugar and powdered sugar but I think powdered sugar blends in the best
- Vanilla extract
- Mini chocolate chips – you could use regular chocolate chips but mini works better in my opinion. You could also try sprinkles!
- Things to dip – fruit like strawberries, grapes, etc. Crackers like graham crackers and nilla wafers are great too!
Mix everything together, stir in the chocolate chips and stick it in the fridge. It will thicken up a bit as the cream cheese gets colder.

How to make this a high protein fruit dip?
The Greek yogurt in this recipe does give it some protein. To add more you could experiment with mixing in some vanilla protein powder – but some may not like the texture that adds. I would start by adding 1/4 cup and go from there.

To make this dip even easier, skip the vanilla and powdered sugar and just use vanilla Greek yogurt instead of plain!
How can I make this a vanilla cream cheese fruit dip?
This dip does use vanilla extra to add a little bit of vanilla flavor, but to really take it to the next level, you could use vanilla yogurt and also make some of this Vanilla Bean Whipped Cream Cheese to swap for the plain cream cheese.
Can I use brown sugar instead of powdered sugar?
I wouldn’t recommend it. Brown sugar won’t mix into the yogurt and cream cheese as well and could make the texture a bit gritty.
Could you make this a flavored cream cheese dip?
Sure! Try grabbing some strawberry cream cheese and strawberry yogurt to give this dip a fun spin. You could also try using orange or lemon yogurt!
Or make a cream cheese dip with citrus zest by adding a little lemon, lime or orange zest.
