Since I didn’t go to the grocery store last week, I had limited choices for my pick of the week. The hubby and I made a random trip to Trader Joe’s and one of the four items we came out with was orzo. I’ve heard of orzo. I’ve probably eaten at some point in my life, but since I had no distinct memory of it, I decided that it could count as my pick of the week.
Unlike the past few weeks of failed picks, see artichokes and parsnips, orzo was a smashing success.
The best thing I learned about orzo? It’s high in protein!!! 7g per serving.
The worst thing I learned about orzo? They don’t sell it at my grocery store. I’m gonna have to stock up next time I see it.
Evidently orzo is most popularly used in soup, which I was unaware of until I started writing this post. However, using it in soup just happens to be one of the ways I used it this week!
I made some chicken and vegetable soup and at the last minute, decided to add orzo instead of regular noodles. The result? FABULOUS! It is definitely my new go-to noodle for soups. It’s small enough that it lets you focus on the other ingredients, but still big enough to have a noodle-y presence.
The other way we tried orzo this week was in a pasta salad type dish. We cooked the orzo and added some veggies and bacon. It made a deliciously filling main dish.
You could also use orzo to make:
Orzo risotto
Orzo mac and cheese
Greek orzo salad
Bottom line: Go buy some orzo immediately and give it a try!
So tell me, have you ever had orzo? What’s your favorite recipe?
In case you missed it yesterday, check out the weekend news! And stayed tuned for a giveaway starting tomorrow morning!!!
Enjoy!

I’m a big fan of Orzo, but haven’t made it in sooooo long! Going to have to pick some up today:)
for sure! let me know what you make with it!
Orzo is one of my favorite foods ever. I could literally eat an entire box with just some butter and parmesean cheese. I also love it with shrimp scampi – delish!

ooooh, i’ve been thinking about making shrimp scampi! yumm
Did you look through all the pasta at the supermarket for Orzo? I bet it is there somewhere on the bottom shelf in the pasta section!
i thought i looked everywhere, but i’ll double check next time i’m there!
yum! i love orzo. i’ve had it in a pasta salad style dish and in risotto form. both delicious! i’ve never actually cooked with it myself, though.

you should give it a try. super easy!
I haven’t actually ever made orzo, but I have eaten it at restaurants and I love it. I love anything like pasta or rice though!

haha and this is the best of both worlds. shaped like rice, but actually noodles
I love cooking with orzo. Unfortuntely the boyfriend doesn’t like it so much. My favorite thing to do is whip up an orzo salad with chopped veggies!
I’m glad your pick of the week was more successful!
me too! keeping my fingers crossed to keep my streak going next week!
Orzo is amazing, I like to cook it with frozen broccoli and cheese… its so yummy!! I can find it in the grocery store, but it comes in a tiny little bag, not a box… if that helps! Maybe look by the little bags of tortellini?
oooh good idea! thanks!
That orzo and veggie soup looks absolutely out of this world. I definitely need to make that!
