Mark Your Calendars: Foodie Penpals for Charity

Hi Friends!

We’re taking a break from Fitness Friday today. I want to tell you guys about a project I’m working on. As you know, each month, I organize Foodie Penpals. As you may or may not know, my parents live in NYC and their neighborhood was one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. Although their apartment is fine, their building is still without power and will be on generator power for several more weeks as all of the building’s electrical systems were destroyed by the flooding. While I’m grateful that my parents are safe and were very lucky to escape with only spoiled food due to loss of power, my heart is breaking for those that were not so lucky. Looking at photos of their neighborhood, seeing all of the small businesses that flooded, the parks and streets littered with trash and debris is overwhelming. Thinking of all the people that lost their homes, those that are still without power, those that are struggling to stay warm as the cold temperatures set in makes me want to cry.

So many people were affected by this storm and it didn’t take me long for me to put on my thinking cap to come up with a way I could help. I immediately thought of Foodie Penpals. I toyed with the idea of doing Foodie Penpals for Charity last December but the program was just a few months old and I didn’t quite get things organized.

This year it was a no brainer. A natural disaster + the approaching holidays means there are lots of people out there that need more help than ever. So I’m turning to you guys. Whether you’ve participated in Foodie Penpals in the past, are doing it currently, or are thinking about doing it in the future…this is the month to get involved! Heck, even if you’ve never done it and aren’t planning to, you can still help!

Below is the information that is currently displayed on the FPP for Charity tab on my blog. It has replaced the traditional FPP tab for the next few weeks. Please keep reading and consider signing up. Let’s make a difference!

Attention all past, present and future Foodie Penpals. I’m talking to all of you- Americans, Canadians, Europeans, Australians…We’re changing things up for Foodie Penpals December!

Instead of matching people up to send FPP packages in December, we’re going to use this group for good and raise some money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. There are two ways you can get involved:

1) I will be setting up a paypal account to accept donations. Please consider donating the $15-$25 you would have spent on purchasing items and mailing your FPP package in December. Donations will be accepted from December 3-7th and I will make one big donation to a recovery organization in the name of Foodie Penpals at the end of the week. I’m still researching organizations. Some that i’ve looked at include Brooklyn Recovery Fund and Kids In Distressed Situations.

2) I’m in the process of searching for an organization that will be collecting holiday gifts for the people affected by this storm. With the holidays approaching, if you’re in the mood to shop instead of just donate money, I will try to provide an address that you can mail gifts to and encourage you to spend $15 to purchase some gifts and send them out so they can be distributed to families.

So….this is just to provide the basics. More details will be coming as I figure them out.

I’m going to leave the signup form open for December even though it isn’t a traditional month of FPP. Consider signing up to be your virtual commitment to donate money or items during the week of Dec 3-7th. I’ll be sending emails with information to those who sign up and also posting info on my blog!

You guys, we have the power to make a huge difference here. Think about it. On average, there are about 1,000 participants per month. If we all donate the $15 we would have spent, that’s $15,000 right there. That’s HUGE. Let’s make a difference!

To recap:

-Sign up now to commit.

-Donate Dec 3rd – 7th!

Let’s raise $15,000 for Hurricane Sandy victims!

  1. Great idea! Happy to join in!

I left NYC just one day before Sandy hit and as we went through our photos this weekend, it was really sad to see places and know that they were completely devastated just a day after we took them. Happy that your parents are doing okay!

  17. Wonderful, wonderful. I am in, and since most of us spend $15 then another $11+ for shipping, perhaps we should just round our contributions up to $30. That way maybe we could raise $30,000. $30 is definitely in my plans. Thanks for all you do and organizing this, Lindsay.

  21. LOVE this! Love this so much! One of my good friends lives in Staten Island and while her house had minimal damage, her neighborhood was destroyed. She’s spent everyday helping her neighbors clean up. I wanted to do something so I sent her a huge care package of gloves, hand warmers, batteries and flash lights to hand out to her neighbors. My parents loved it so much, they helped me pull together the package.
