Hi Friends!
Thanks so much for all your congratulations and well wishes! In case you missed the news, Squish is going to be a big brother! Now that the cat is out of the bag, I thought I’d fill you guys in on a few details.
The first question everyone asks is always “How are you feeling” so I’ll get right to it. Short answer- terrible. Some of you longtime readers may remember that I battled all-day nausea when pregnant with Squish from week 5 until week 41. This baby is proving to be no exception. My “morning sickness” is actually best when I first wake up and I feel progressively worse as the day goes on.
In addition, I’m exhausted. During my first pregnancy, I didn’t feel well, but I wasn’t really ever any more tired than usual until about 30 weeks. I even wrote about it in this 10 Things That Surprised Me About Pregnancy post. I remember thinking that I didn’t really understand people who complained about being SO tired during their first trimester. Well friends, I get it now and holy moly is it rough. I’m sure that some of my exhaustion stems from the fact that I now have a toddler that pretty much does not stop moving from 6am to 7pm but I definitely experienced the first-trimester tiredness that so many people speak of. There were nights that I crawled into bed at 7:30pm and was asleep in seconds.
There were also afternoons where I plopped Squish on the couch and turned on the tv and literally took a 10-minute cat nap while sitting on the couch beside him because I just could not keep my eyes open. Wild toddler + pregnancy + coffee taste aversion makes for some long days.
So yes. The past 8 weeks have been a bit rough. I did my best to not let it impact Squish and tried to keep us busy and active but there were definitely a few days where I could barely get off the couch and we watched a lot of tv. Thank god for PBS.
When I was sick with Squish, I never really had much of an appetite. I pretty much lived on Cheerios and pb &j for the first several weeks. This time around, I’m nauseous but I’m also hungry. Like starving. And no matter what I eat, I feel sick. Anything from enchiladas to dry wheat toast. Doesn’t matter. Nothing really helps. So, I’ve done my best to eat a little better than I did in the early weeks of my last pregnancy. If I’m going to be sick anyway, I may as well get those nutrients, right? During my first pregnancy, I lost about 4 pounds initially and didn’t really start gaining weight until about 17 weeks. This time, I don’t think that’s the case. Although I haven’t weighed myself, I’d guess I’ve gained 2-3 pounds.
I’ve also been so so thirsty. All the time. But the thought of drinking anything usually makes me gag…so I’ve been having to force down water. Even my beloved La Croix is not agreeing with me 🙁 I’ve also had lots of cramps. I remember these from last time around too but I think my OB but it best when she said that your uterus is just grumpier the second time around so more cramping is totally normal. I feel my cramps in my back so my heating pad has been my best friend.
Ok, so enough about how I’m feeling. I think you get the picture that I’m not feeling well. I’m currently 13 weeks and not really showing many signs of feeling better but I can always hope 🙂
My due date is November 13th…so about 2 weeks after Squish’s second birthday. Squish came almost 2 weeks late so we’ll see what this one does. We don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet but will be finding out in a couple of weeks thanks to some genetic testing.
As far as how I found out I was pregnant, that’s a bit of a long story but I’ll give you the condensed version. However, I first want to point out that as many of you may remember that we had a hard time getting pregnant with Squish. I wrote this post: It’s Not Easy For Everyone a few weeks before finding out I was pregnant with him after months and months of trying. So for those of you that were wondering, it wasn’t much the second time around. I’ve had countless people tell me it’s so much easier the second time. That it’ll happen so much faster because your body just knows what to do. NOT TRUE for everyone….so even if it was true for you, please don’t say it to someone else.
Anyways, after trying for several months, I went through three rounds of clomid. After the third round, I got my period as scheduled and we had an appointment to meet with the same fertility doctor we saw last time. Two weeks after my period, I got what I thought was another period. It was a really short cycle but I thought maybe the clomid messed with my cycle so I didn’t think much of it. A week after that I had more bleeding and I just wasn’t feeling well overall so I decided I should go see my OB. I never even considered the fact that I could be pregnant because I had gotten my period. I was scheduled for an ultrasound to investigate the cause of bleeding between periods.
The ultrasound revealed that SURPRISE! I was 6 weeks pregnant. However I had a large implantation bleed in my uterus and the baby’s heartrate was very low. Those two things combined didn’t give the baby a good prognosis. They said there was nothing to do but wait and come back in a week.
A week later, the baby had grown appropriately over the course of the week and the heart rate was up to the normal range. However, the bleed was also bigger. The improved heartbeat was positive but there was still nothing we could do but wait. They told me to come back in a month.
Talk about a long month of waiting.
At 11 weeks, I went back. I could tell, based on my stomach, that baby was growing so I was less worried about that and more worried about the bleed. This time, the ultrasound revealed that the baby was indeed growing right on track, but again the bleed was bigger in my uterus. I was again told to come back in a week.
At my 12 week appointment, everything was still looking good with the baby. Growth was appropriate, very active, good heart rate. But the bleed is still there. It’s apparently in the best possible place it could be in my uterus (ie below the placenta, not behind it) and isn’t impacting the baby right now, which is good. According to my OB, these bleeds are fairly common and for most people they either clot and come out or are reabsorbed by the body by about the 20-week mark. Or in some cases they just stay put, stop growing and come out at delivery. For other people, they can cause complications later in the pregnancy.
For now, there’s nothing to really do but wait. Nothing I can do can make the bleed better or worse. I have another ultrasound in 2 weeks to continue to monitor the baby’s growth and the bleed. It’s scary, but at the same time, I know that worrying doesn’t make it any better so I’m doing my best to just stay positive. Like my OB said, technology is a blessing and a curse. Years ago I wouldn’t have had this many ultrasounds and I wouldn’t have even known about the bleed. I’d just be living life happily pregnant.
So there you have it. Other questions you may have:
Are you showing earlier the second time?
Yes. I’ve definitely noticed the bump growing faster this time around.
Are you still going to workout?
Yes. Just like my last pregnancy I’ll continue to do Crossfit until my OB tells me not to. I’m using significantly lighter weights and modifying movements that may be extra jarring like box jumps, etc, going slower to make sure to control my breathing and taking more rest days.
Do you have a feeling about whether it’s a boy or girl?
Yes, but I’m keeping that to myself for now 🙂
Is Squish excited?
He really has no idea.
Is hubby excited?
Yes! We’re both thrilled.
Do you have any cravings?
Not really…but I’ve been loving fresh raspberries. Actually any fruit. And once I find something that agrees with me, I certainly stick with it. Like the two weeks I ate these Avocado Chicken Burgers for lunch and dinner literally every day.
Anything else to share?
Yes! Surprise #2- we’re moving! Just in case we didn’t have enough going on right now, we found a new house (just a few miles from where we are now) and we close on Friday! Cleaning out and packing up 8 years worth of stuff in our current house while pregnant, sick and exhausted has been a bit of a battle, but we made it! Hubby worked hard doing lots of home improvement projects to get our house into shape to sell and we’re actually moving in two phases which makes it easier.
I’ve been doing my best to keep the blog updated, continue to share recipes with you guys etc but honestly, I just need a little bit of a break. SO, I’m using this opportunity to introduce you all to some of my blogging friends. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing recipes from a few lovely ladies who have graciously agreed to help me out! I can’t wait for you to meet them and check out their blogs. SO MANY DELICIOUS RECIPES!!!
Ok, I think that’s all for now! Thanks again for all your support and we’d appreciate any positive thoughts you want to send our way about the baby!
Enjoy!
–Lindsay–

What an exciting time! Huge congratulations. I feel your stress about the bleed, I had one at 14 weeks and of course right after you’re thinking you’re in the ‘free zone’ of any miscarriages…and it was soo stressful. Mine didn’t show up in the 12 week ultrasound and then after working out I started bleeding. After another ultrasound they realized it was a clot in my uterus so I got put on exercise rest but told ‘not to worry’ …whaaat…lol..hard not to do..so take care, rest when you need to and positive thoughts…baby is healthy and happy and that’s what’s important!!! Congrats again and can’t wait to hear more about it!

Yipeeee!! And congrats ! Sorry you are feeling icky- prayers that that soon stops and that your bleed goes away with no complications! I learned something this weekend that might be helpful to you– when you feel that gag reflex start to kick in or know it might squeeze your left thumb!- I have been putting it inside my fist- it has worked for me- but I am not pregnant !!!
Happy moving !

Congrats Lindsay!!! That is so exciting! LOL To PBS! I woke myself up snoring while my kids watched sesame street many, many times during my last pregnancy. haha! No shame! Growing a human is hard work!! So excited for you and your family! 🙂 <3

I am so, so happy for you guys, but sorry you are feeling so lousy. I wasn’t sick my entire pregnancy but definitely remember living off Rice Krispies the first trimester. That’s got to be challenging with a little one! I do hope you get some relief this go around or at least find some foods that agree with you. I also had a small bleed early on in my pregnancy. It was a scary time but that’s awesome news that the baby continues to grow! Prayer for you guys in the next few crazy months!

Congrats, Lindsay!! I did have that extreme fatigue first trimester with both girls but it faded by week 12 or 13 so hopefully you feel a bit better soon.. at least in terms of more energy! I remember putting the tv on a crashing for cat naps too. 🙂 I’m glad you can take a blogging break too. No reason to go crazy trying to do it all!

First of all! Congratulations! Second, I just called my mom to confirm this story. She was unaware of her pregnancy with me because of a uterine bleed until 4-5 months along. I came a bit premature but otherwise healthy and normal! I know it’s hard but at least that is one story to give you peace of mind 🙂 You will be in our prayers!
Lisa says
Lindsay, first of all, CONGRATS!!! I’m so excited for your and your husband, and I know Squish will be an awesome older brother! I’m so sorry to hear about the pain you’re going through right now! Fingers crossed that the bleeding isn’t too much of a problem. Do rest up, and if there’s anything I can do to help, do let me know!
Melissa says
Little late to the game on this, but congratulations! Wow, this sounds like a rough couple of months for you! The bleed thing has to be so scary and just downright annoying. I’m so glad you were able to get pregnant again. I also agree that it’s so annoying to hear “oh it’ll be like this the second time” or whatever people may say. No one can predict the future or how biology will work 😉
I am so excited to hear more and find out what your baby is!

Oh my goodness! You look phenomenal, and it seems like your family is thrilled about gaining a new member to the family. Congratulations on the new addition! Thanks so much for keeping us updated!
